The Soul Is In The Blood
He Gave You His Righteousness Which Is In His Soul/Mind!

"When You make His {Jesus Christ's} SOUL an offering for sin, he shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His SOUL, and be satisfied. By His KNOWLEDGE My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities... because He poured out His SOUL unto death..." (Isaiah 53:10-12)

What Is The SOUL?...

The word translated as 'SOUL' in Isaiah 53, above, is the Hebrew word 'NEPHESH'. Strong's Concordance of the Bible defines this Old Testament word as, "a breathing creature, i.e. ANIMAL of vitality".

Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words defines "SOUL" (‘nephesh') as: SOUL; SELF; Life; Person; HEART." Vines goes on to say, "This is a very common term in both ancient and modern Semitic languages.... The basic meaning is apparently related to the rare verbal form, ‘napash'. The noun refers to the essence of life, the act of breathing, taking breath. However, from that concrete concept, a number of more abstract meanings were developed... IN OVER 400 LATER OCCURRENCES IT IS TRANSLATED ‘SOUL.' While this serves to make sense in most passages, it is an unfortunate mistranslation of the term. The real difficulty of the term is seen in the inability of almost all English translations to find a consistent equivalent or even a small group of high-frequency equivalents for the term. The KJV alone uses over 28 different English terms for this one Hebrew word.

Unger's Bible Dictionary says the SOUL "may indicate not only the entire INNER NATURE of man, but also his entire personality, i.e., all that pertains to the person of man; in the sense of person; somebody, everybody... It would thence be wrongly concluded that the soul is what constitutes the person of man; for the brute {animal} is also called NEPHESH (soul).

Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary tells us , "The word soul also refers to the inner life of man, the seat of his emotions, and the center of human personality. The first use of the word soul in the Old Testament expresses this meaning: "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being (soul)" <Gen. 2:7>.

If Nelson's is correct, we see the first man, Adam (prior to his fall), being given the "inner life..., emotions, and center of" God's personality.

The soul is described as the seat of many emotions and desires: the desire for food..., love..., longing for God..., rejoicing..., knowing..., and memory..."

Strong‘s Concordance of the Bible defines SPIRIT as, "wind; by resemblance breath, i.e. a sensible (or even violent) exhalation; ....BY RESEMBLANCE SPIRIT, BUT ONLY OF A RATIONAL BEING (including it's expression and functions)".

The New Testament SOUL 'psuche' is defined by Strong's as, "breath, i.e.. spirit, (The ANIMAL sentient principle only)".

Concerning this New Testament word, Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words states, "The Gk. term ‘psuche' has the simple meaning of ‘life' (Matt. 6:25; Luke 12:22); that in which there is life, a living being (1 Cor. 15:45); every soul, i.e., every one (Acts 3:23). It also has the meaning of the seat of the feelings, desires, affections, aversions (... Heart...); the human soul, insofar as it is so constituted that, by the right use of aids offered it by God, it can attain its highest end and secure eternal blessedness; the soul regarded as a mortal being designed for everlasting life (3 John 2; Heb. 13:17; James 1:21; 5:20; 1 Pet. 1:9)......".

Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary says, "In the New Testament, Jesus spoke of his soul as being 'exceedingly sorrowful' <Matt. 26:38>. Mary, the mother of Jesus, proclaimed that her soul 'magnifies the Lord' <Luke 1:46>. John prayed that Gaius would 'prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers' <3 John 2>."

Strong‘s Concordance defines the New Testament SPIRIT as, "a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; A SPIRIT, i.e. (HUMAN) THE RATIONAL SOUL, VITAL PRINCIPLE, MENTAL DISPOSITION, etc., OR (SUPERHUMAN) AN ANGEL, DEMON, OR (DIVINE) GOD, CHRIST'S SPIRIT, THE HOLY SPIRIT".

You may have noticed that two of the above Dictionaries used the word 'HEART' in their definition of SOUL. However, the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia says the following, "regarding the word 'heart', "as representing the man himself, it was considered to be the seat of the emotions and passions and appetites..., and embraced likewise the intellectual and moral faculties-- ... these are necessarily ascribed to the ‘soul’ as well.

Soul in Hebrew can never be rendered by ‘heart’; nor can ‘heart’ be considered as a synonym for ‘soul.’ Cremer has well observed: ‘The Hebrew nephesh (‘soul’) is never translated kardia (‘heart’). .... The range of the Hebrew nephesh {soul}, to which the Greek psuche {soul} alone corresponds, differs so widely from the ideas connected with psuche {soul}, that utter confusion would have ensued had psuche {soul} been employed in an unlimited degree for lebh (‘heart’). The Biblical lebh {heart} never, like psuche {soul}, denotes the personal subject, nor could it do so. That which in classical Greek is ascribed to psuche (a good soul, a just soul, etc.) is in the Bible ascribed to the heart alone and cannot be otherwise’ (Cremer, Lexicon, article ‘Kardia,’ 437 ff, German edition)...

We might also refer here to the command, on which both the Old Testament and New Testament revelation of love is based: ‘Thou shalt love Yahweh thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might’ <Deut 6:5>; where ‘heart’ always takes the first place, and is the term which in the New Testament rendering remains unchanged (compare <Mt 22:37; Mk 12:30,33; Lk 10:27>, where ‘heart’ always takes precedence). In reference to the word MIND, however, International Standard Bible Encyclopedia says the following, "Sometimes nephesh or ‘soul’ is rendered by ‘mind’..., ‘desire of his soul’ or ‘mind’;..., ‘grief of mind,’ ruah... Sometimes lebh {heart} is used, as in <Isa 46:8>, ‘bring it to mind’ (literally, ‘heart’), or in <Ps 31:12>... [J. I. MARAIS; from International Standard Bible Encyclopedia]

Therefore, I now define SOUL as the MIND, rather than as the 'mind and heart'.

Summation:
In summation, Vines Expository Dictionary says, "The language of (Heb. 4:12) suggests the extreme difficulty of distinguishing between the soul and the spirit, alike in their nature and in their activities. Generally speaking the spirit is the higher, the soul the lower element. The spirit may be recognized as the life principle [a basic, or essential, quality or element determining intrinsic (the internal) nature or characteristic behavior] bestowed on man by God, the soul as the resulting life constituted [made up; formed] in the individual, the body being the material organism animated [given life; filled with life] by soul and spirit.... Body and soul are the constituents [elements or parts] of the man according to (Matt. 6:25...); body and spirit according to (Luke 8:55...). In (Matt. 26:38) the emotions are associated with the soul, in (John 13:21) with the spirit... In (Ps. 35:9) the soul rejoices in God, in (Luke 1:47) the spirit."

We do not want to confuse the mind with the brian. The brain is a physical organ. The mind, however, is defined as, "the part of a ... being that governs thought, perception, feeling, will, memory, and imagination; recollection: ... point of view {judgement, opinion}" (Webster’s Dictionary).

All Breathing Creatures Receive A Soul, Including Man -
Man(kind) received his "soul" [nephesh] in Genesis 2:7: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (KJV)

The same "soul" [nephesh] was given to the animals and mammals (all breathing creatures) in such verses as Genesis 2:19, "Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living SOUL, that was its name."

Neither the Old Testament Hebrew or the New Testament Greek completely separate the "spirit" and "soul". The biggest difference: the SOUL is in all breathing creatures, including human beings and God. The spirit is in human beings and God alone.

The Mind...
NEPHESH (soul) has also been translated in the Old Testament, as "mind" in the KJV Bible. A few examples follow:

(Deut 28:65) And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind [SOUL]" (KJV).

(1 Sam 2:35) 'Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind [SOUL]. I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever. (NKJ)

(1 Chronicles 28:9) "As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing MIND [SOUL]; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. (NAS)

As we can see, in the Old Testament the word 'nephesh' has been translated as both "soul" and "mind". The SOUL [nephesh] is the MIND, INNER BEING, LIFE in all creatures that breathe, including man and God.

Does God Have A 'SOUL'...
In the following verses 'nephesh' was translated as both MIND and SOUL:

(Jer 15:1) Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my MIND [SOUL] could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. (KJV)

(1 Sam 2:35) And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in My MIND [SOUL]: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever. (KJV)

(Judg 10:16) And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and HIS SOUL [MIND] was grieved for the misery of Israel. (KJV)

Christ Sacrificed His Soul {MIND} For You

"When You make His SOUL {Mind} an offering for sin, he shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His SOUL {Mind}, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities...
BECAUSE HE POURED OUT HIS SOUL {MIND} UNTO DEATH..." (Isaiah 53:10-12)

Do The Old and New Testament Agree? YES!
Several years ago God woke me early in the morning with the whispered word "Jonah". I wasn't sure why He had said this. Rather than reading the book of Jonah immediately, I assumed I must have heard Him incorrectly.

Later in the day, Jesus asked me, "How did I defeat satan in Hell?" I immediately remembered the verse, "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Matt 12:40).

I opened my Bible to the book of Jonah and read:

"Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish's belly. And he said: "I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, and He answered me. "Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and You heard my voice. For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas {peoples}, and the floods surrounded me; all Your billows and Your waves passed over me.

Then I said, 'I have been cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.' THE WATERS SURROUNDED ME, EVEN TO MY SOUL {MIND}; the deep closed around me; WEEDS WERE WRAPPED AROUND MY HEAD. I went down to the moorings of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed behind me forever; yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God. WHEN MY SOUL {MIND} FAINTED WITHIN ME, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer went up to You, into Your holy temple. Those who regard worthless idols {anything of the world} forsake Mercy [also 'reproof']. But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. (Jonah 1:17-2:10)

Jesus defeated satan using Praise and Thanksgiving! Because God is the Word, it is easy to understand His choice of weapon, 'the Word'. (also see Matt 4:4-10). Christ POURED out His MIND (SOUL) for our MIND'S (Soul's) Salvation.

Notice, God made direct references to Christ's SOUL [MIND] in two verses above; and that Christ's MIND (SOUL) were set free as a result of Thanksgiving and Praise. Just as importantly, we see that Jonah confirmed Isaiah's teaching in Isaiah 53. Let's look at Isaiah 53, and compare it to Jonah 1:17, above:

(The following definitions in brackets [ ] are from the Strong's Concordance Of The Bible. "Travail" has two definitions. The first is from Strong's; and the second one is from Webster's Dictionary.)

"Yet it pleased the ETERNAL SELF EXISTENT to CRUMBLE Him; He has RUBBED and WORN HIM, and therefore He is MADE WEAK, SICK, AFFLICTED and GRIEVED.

When you will make His SOUL, MIND an offering for sin AND GUILT, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the ETERNAL SELF EXISTENT shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the travail, worry and UNDERGO THE LABOR OF CHILDBIRTH of and in His SOUL, MIND; and shall BE FILLED TO SATISFACTION: by the KNOWLEDGE of Himself shall my RIGHTEOUS servant justify many; and He shall CARRY AND BE PREGNANT WITH their iniquities.

Therefore, I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the PLUNDER TAKEN FROM HIS ENEMY with the strong; because He WAS MADE BARE, NAKED, EMPTY, POURED OUT AND DEMOLISHED in His SOUL, MIND into THE PLACE OF THE 'DEAD' (OR STATE OF EXISTENCE, HADES), and was numbered with THOSE WHO BROKE AWAY FROM JUST AUTHORITY and REBELLED AND REVOLTED; yet He LIFTED the CRIME AND PENALTY of many, and FASTENED AGAINST AND INVADED THE PROPERTY RIGHTS... OF ANOTHER (SATAN) WITHOUT HIS CONSENT; AND STEPPED OVER (ACROSS) INTO SATAN'S LAND for THOSE WHO BROKE AWAY FROM JUST AUTHORITY, AND REBELLED AND REVOLTED."]
(Isaiah 53:10- 12)

Definitions:

(American Heritage Dictionary)

Without a doubt, Jonah 1 and Isaiah 53 agree. They tell us that it was Jesus Christ's SOUL, which is His MIND, that was made an offering for sin. The Father, Jehovah, saw the "travail [LABOR] of His SOUL", and was satisfied. It is through "the KNOWLEDGE OF HIMSELF", His Goodness and Righteousness, that God's righteous servant Jesus Christ justifies many.

Jesus Christ "carried and was pregnant with our iniquities"; and He underwent "the labor of childbirth" in His Soul and Mind?

Jesus LITERALLY POURS Out His SOUL - How?

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls;
FOR IT IS THE BLOOD THAT MAKES ATONEMENT FOR THE SOUL."
(Lev 17:11; NKJ)

The Atonement for the SOUL requires the shedding of Blood because the SOUL is in the Blood!

As astounding as this statement may seem, it is true. Before we can begin to comprehend what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross, we must understand this fact. God makes some very exciting statements about the Soul in the Old Testament. The following proof was revealed to me by God, and God alone. Let's now look at these verses.

(Genesis 9:4): "But flesh with the life thereof, which is the Blood thereof, shall ye not eat...."(KJV)

The word translated "LIFE" in Genesis 9:4 is the Hebrew word "NEPHESH". This is the same word translated in the Old Testament as 'soul'. Look at this verse again: "Only you shall not eat flesh with its life [SOUL, MIND], that is the Blood...". Put in the simplest terms it reads: "The SOUL and MIND are the Blood, which is in the flesh; therefore, you will not eat the flesh...."

The Blood and Soul are one in the same, thus the Blood is the Mind. Atonement of the Soul requires the shedding of Blood because the Soul is in the Blood. Still have some doubts? Here are a few more verses stating the same thing:

(Lev 17:10-14) And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that eateth any manner of Blood, I will set my face against that soul [MIND] that eateth Blood, and will cut him off from among his people [A CONGREGATED UNIT]. For the life [SOUL; MIND] of the flesh is in the Blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement [COVERING] for your souls [MIND]: for it is the Blood that maketh atonement [COVERING] by reason [UPON, OVER] the life [SOUL; MIND]. Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul [MIND] of you shall eat Blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat Blood. And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, who taketh in hunting any beast or bird that may be eaten; he shall pour out the Blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For as to the life [SOUL, MIND] of all flesh, the Blood thereof is {all one} with the life [SOUL; MIND] thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the Blood of no manner of flesh; for the life [SOUL; MIND] of all flesh is the Blood thereof" (ASV).

Notice, we are told, "... the SOUL/MIND of the flesh is in the Blood." We sometimes speak of having problems with 'our flesh'. We now see that our 'flesh' has a mind; or that our soul (old mind) is the 'thinker' of the flesh. Our actual battle is in our 'old mind'; and our freedom lies in receiving the NEW Mind of Christ.

(Deut 12:23-24) "Only be sure that thou eat not the Blood: for the Blood is the life [SOUL; MIND]; and thou shalt not eat the life [SOUL; MIND] with the flesh. Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it out upon the earth as water. (ASV)

More literally transcribed: "Only be sure that you do not eat the Blood: for the Blood is the SOUL and MIND, and you may not eat the SOUL and MIND with the flesh.

Strong's Concordance defines ATONEMENT as "a covering". Blood is given for the atonement or covering of the SOUL and MIND. "For the life [SOUL (MIND)] of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement [covering] for your souls [MIND]; for IT IS THE BLOOD THAT MAKES ATONEMENT [covering] FOR THE SOUL [MIND]" (Lev. 17:11; NKJ).

The Blood of Jesus Christ, which contains His Soul and Mind, not only covers over, or makes atonement for, our old Soul, mind, Old Man, it literally replaces our old mind, soul, and blood with Christ's (the anointed) new blood, Mind and Soul.

(Eph 4:22-24) "that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. (NKJ)

(Rom 12:2) "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (NKJ)

(Col 3:9-10) "Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him".

All animals, including man, have been given a soul; and though man's soul (mind) is more intelligent than all other animals, it is still the soul (mind) of an animal. This clarifies mankind's need for Christ's Blood, His Mind. After all, man's fall was the result of Adam and Eve choosing to eat from the Tree of KNOWLEDGE of Good and EVIL.

Isaiah 53 stated that Jesus Christ is God's RIGHTEOUS servant; and that it is through Christ's KNOWLEDGE of Himself that many are justified. 1 Corinthians 15:45 reminds us that "... The first man, Adam, was made a living soul {MIND}. The last Adam {Jesus Christ} became a life-giving {re-vitalizing} Spirit".

In conclusion, the New Testament teaches us that we do indeed need, and receive, the MIND of Christ:

"LET THIS MIND BE IN YOU, WHICH WAS ALSO IN CHRIST JESUS"
(Philippians 2:5)

"... WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST"
(1 Corinthians 2:16)

"Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, ARM YOURSELVES ALSO WITH THE SAME MIND, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, BUT FOR THE WILL OF GOD".
(1 Peter 4:1-2)

Christ held the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God within His perfect MIND, which is His soul, His Blood. His blood was shed for all, and brings justification to many, as His RIGHTEOUS MIND is given to all who will receive it. Not only did He give us His MIND (SOUL, BLOOD), but He also took our sinful minds from us. It is His RIGHTEOUS MIND, SOUL, BLOOD that speaks to us, from within our new MIND, Christ's MIND in us.

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia offers this fascinating article, with regards to Jesus' death, and the shedding of His blood (and water):

John 19:34 ... "refers to the piercing of the Savior's side by the soldier. The evangelist notes here what he, as an eyewitness of the crucifixion, had seen as a surprising fact. Whereon this surprise was founded cannot now be more than guessed at....

The physiological aspect of this incident of the crucifixion has been first discussed by Gruner (Commentatio de morte Jesu Christi vera, Halle, 1805), who has shown that the blood released by the spear-thrust of the soldier must have been extravagated before the opening of the side took place, for only so could it have been poured forth in the described manner. ..

Some modern physiologists are convinced that in this passage a wonderful phenomenon is reported to us, which, inexplicable to the sacred historian, contains for us an almost certain clue to the real cause of the Saviour's death. Dr. Stroud (On the Physiological Cause of the Death of Christ, London, 1847) basing his remarks on numerous postmortems, pronounced the opinion that here we had a proof of the death of Christ being due not to the effects of crucifixion but to "laceration or rupture of the heart" as a consequence of supreme mental agony and sorrow. It is well attested that usually the suffering on the cross was very prolonged. It often lasted two or three days, when death would supervene from exhaustion. There were no physical reasons why Christ should not have lived very much longer on the cross than He did. On the other hand, death caused by laceration of the heart in consequence of great mental suffering would be almost instantaneous. In such a case the phrase "of a broken heart," becomes literally true. The life blood flowing through the aperture or laceration into the pericardium or caul of the heart, being extravagated, soon coagulates into the red clot (blood) and the limpid serum (water). This accumulation in the heart-sac was released by the spear-thrust of the soldier (which here takes providentially the place of a postmortem without which it would have been impossible to determine the real cause of death), and from the gaping wound there flow the two component parts of blood distinctly visible {the red clot (blood) and the limpid serum (water)} ...

While we may never reach a state of absolute certainty on this subject, there is no valid reason to deny the probability of this view of the death of Christ. It certainly gives a more solemn insight into Christ's spiritual anguish, "the travail of his soul {mind}" on our behalf, which weighed upon Him so heavily that long before the usual term of bodily and therefore endurable suffering of crucified persons, Christ's loving heart {soul/mind} broke, achieving the great atoning sacrifice for all mankind.

Is Communion Ever Symbolic?
"Then Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven — not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever." [John 6:53-58; NKJV]

"The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.

Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything?
